Total Parenteral Nutrition

People normally get all their daily nutrition through what they eat and what they drink. However, there are times when people cannot consume (eat or drink) enough nutrition to sustain life. This is where Parenteral Nutrition becomes an ideal intervention so that the patient can still continue receiving his daily required nutrition.

Parenteral nutrition is a medical term used for replacing or supplementing a person’s nutrition by intravenous means. Parenteral Nutrition comes in a bag and contains specific amount of the daily nutrition including but not limited to:

medicines

  • Carbohydrate
  • Protein
  • Fats
  • Vitamins,
  • Electrolytes
    • Sodium
    • Potassium
    • Magnesium
    • Calcium

These are nutrition requirements for the body. The medical doctor in consultation with the dietitian, and pharmacist will determine what a patient needs are, as it relates to their medical condition and their nutritional status.

Parenteral Nutrition can cover over a span of a few weeks (short term) or it could cover several weeks to months (long term). It is usually self-administered at home by the patient.

With Abide Health Solution LLC, a nurse will go to the patient’s home to teach the patient (and support system) all there is to know about administering Parenteral Nutrition in a home setting. We also ensure proper maintenance of the parenteral nutrition equipment and administration by conducting regular nurse visits to monitor, assess and reinforce the necessary teaching that the patient and their support system need.
